Best Jobs for Military Spouses in San Diego

San Diego is one of the better places in the country to be a military spouse looking for work. That's not a pep talk — it's a function of the economy here.

I'm a realtor, not a career counselor, so I'll stay in my lane on career advice and point you to the real resources. But I work with PCS families into San Diego constantly, and there are two things I do know: what this local economy actually runs on, and how the geography works. That second one matters more than people expect, and I'll get to it.

Do this before anything else

If you're a military spouse, you have benefits most job seekers don't. Use them before you start applying.

• SpouseWorks Scholarship (formerly MyCAA): up to $4,000 for licenses, certifications, associate degrees, and continuing education. All ranks qualify.
• License reimbursement: up to $1,000 if you're relicensing in California because of PCS orders and you held that license at a prior duty station. Navy generally requires submission within 24 months of the orders.
• MSEP: 1,000+ employer partners who've specifically committed to hiring military spouses.
• Free career coaching through Military OneSource at 800-342-9647.

And the California-specific one nobody tells you about: since July 1, 2023, every California Department of Consumer Affairs licensing board is required to offer temporary licensure to spouses and domestic partners of active-duty members stationed here. You need a current, active, unrestricted license in another state with the same scope of practice. The temporary license is good for 12 months or until your standard license is issued or denied, application fees are waived, and depending on the profession you may need the California Law and Ethics exam and fingerprinting.

If you're a nurse, hygienist, therapist, cosmetologist, or anything else DCA licenses — start this before you arrive. It's the difference between working in month one and working in month six.

What San Diego's economy actually runs on

The Navy is the single largest employer in the region. That's the starting point for everything else here.

Beyond that, the big employers cluster in a few places:

• Healthcare: Kaiser Permanente, Sharp HealthCare, Scripps Health
• Education: UC San Diego, San Diego Unified School District, San Diego Community College District
• Government: County of San Diego, City of San Diego
• Defense and tech: General Atomics and the broader defense contracting sector, plus Qualcomm and the tech economy around it

Notice what's on that list: healthcare, education, government, defense. Those are four of the most military-spouse-friendly sectors that exist — high volume hiring, credential-based rather than network-based, and present at basically every duty station you'll ever go to.

The routes worth working

Federal civilian. There's a noncompetitive hiring authority that lets agencies appoint qualified military spouses directly into competitive service positions, with no grade limit, for permanent or term roles. With seven installations in the region plus county and city government, San Diego has an unusually deep federal and public-sector job market. And it's the most portable option there is — federal jobs exist at every duty station. Set up a USAJOBS profile and have your eligibility documentation ready to attach.

On-base and base-adjacent. NEX and commissary, MWR and NAF positions, base childcare, contractor roles supporting the installations. Often the fastest way to get working, and a real foot in the door for federal or contractor work later.

Healthcare. Kaiser, Sharp, and Scripps hire continuously across every level — from medical assistant and front office through nursing and imaging. Per diem and PRN scheduling gives you actual control over hours. Get your California temporary license started early.

Defense contracting. San Diego has a dense contractor ecosystem. Plenty of these roles are administrative, program support, logistics, or technical writing rather than engineering. If your spouse's status makes clearance sponsorship realistic for you, this is a strong long-term lane.

Education. Substitute teaching through the districts is one of the most genuinely flexible options available — you take the days you take. It also gets you inside a large employer with other openings.

The part I actually know: geography

Here's what nobody tells you before you get here. San Diego is spread out, and where you live determines which jobs are realistic for you.

There are seven installations in the region: Naval Base San Diego, Naval Base Point Loma, Naval Base Coronado, MCRD San Diego, MCAS Miramar, U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego, and Camp Pendleton up north. They are not close to each other. A commute that's fine from one neighborhood is brutal from another.

This matters twice over for a military family — once for your spouse's report time, and once for your job. Two commutes, two schedules, and usually childcare in the middle.

A few things I'd want you to know:

• East County — Alpine, Lakeside, El Cajon — runs on the 8, which is usually clear. It's a straight shot toward the central bases and the El Cajon employment corridor, and the drive is often calmer than what people deal with on the 15 coming down from North County.
• Camp Pendleton is genuinely far from most of the rest of the county. If your spouse is at Pendleton, that changes the whole housing conversation.
• Whatever the map says, drive it before you commit. At your real times, both directions.

This is the piece I can actually help with, and it's not a sales pitch — it's the thing PCS families most often get wrong and can't easily undo once the lease is signed or the offer is accepted.

A realistic timeline

Most spouses I talk to underestimate how long licensing and federal hiring take. Federal hiring in particular can run months. Start the paperwork before you arrive, not after — the temporary licensure route especially.

And skip anything asking you to pay to start working. Legitimate employers don't charge you to be hired. Military families get targeted for exactly this, and Military OneSource career coaches will sanity-check anything you're unsure about.
